The Forest Trust (TFT) has begun working on two new teak and mahogany plantation forestry projects in Java, Indonesia.

Continuing its partnership with state-owned company Perum Perhuntani, TFT is managing KPH Pemalang on the north coast of Java and KPH Ngawi in East Java.

The two districts represent over 70,000 hectares of plantation rich in teak and mahogany.

?KPH Pemalang comprises 24,393ha of teak, mahogany, acacia and rosewood. KPH Ngawi covers 45,907ha of teak, mahogany, acacia and eucalyptus alba.

“We are supporting the company towards FSC certification for its forests by helping to implement certification action plans for the districts,” TFT said.

The new projects take TFT’s total number of projects in Indonesia to 15, eight of them with Perum Perhutani.

To date, TFT has helped Perum Perhutani successfully achieve FSC certification for half of the forests they work together on.?

TFT has been working with Perhutani to build the capacity of its staff to implement sustainable forest management practices across all 57 forest districts under its management. ?

?TFT has recently helped Perhutani eliminate firearms from all its forests through a ‘drop the guns’ programme that has dramatically reduced violence and hostility between state guards, illegal loggers and local communities.
