The Thai government wants the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to impose restrictions on the trade of rosewood.

Meetings have taken place between Thai government departments and with the police as the country tries to fight against illegal rosewood logging in Thailand.

Police have made a series of raids on illegal loggers since the end of the last year, with more than 50,000 logs seized and hundreds of people arrested.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has set up a task force to tackle the illegal trade and plans to embark on a satellite survey of rosewood resources to better enable enforcement officers to protect the valuable trees.
