About 25 tonnes of timber were reported destroyed in a fire at Total Timber in Formby on June 3.

But firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading to the rest of the yard and buildings.

About 300 tonnes of timber was stored at the business, which supplies a full range of timber and wood products, including roof trusses.

A fire officer said the prompt action of an adjacent business helped prevent the fire becoming more serious.

“The operator did all his checks and closed up at 2pm,” said a fire brigade spokesperson. “We were called at 2.50pm. Certainly, the dry conditions enabled the fire to spread quickly.”

An investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire but it is not being treated as suspicious.
