The declaration follows an extensive investigation by The Federation into allegations made last year by Greenpeace.

The environmental group claimed that bintangor face veneers on Chinese plywood were from illegally-felled trees in PNG.

TTF chief executive John White advised members to avoid PNG and the Solomons when sourcing timber products due to the “absence of credible evidence of legality”.

“We encourage engagement with any supplier who demonstrates credible environmental good practice no matter from which country they operate.

“However, the current situation in PNG and the Solomon Islands means there is very little or no material meeting the environmental standards the UK market requires. We therefore believe it best to advise our members accordingly.”
