The growing timber window market has convinced UCM Timber plc that the time is right to sign up to the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the BWF Timber Window Accreditation Scheme as an approved supplier.

Explaining the decision, Mark Plews, UCM Timber’s managing director, said: ‘From time to time we are asked to support various causes in the timber trade and on this occasion we felt it was right to do so as we are selling into the timber window market. It is a growing sector and we are getting more and more joinery manufacturers coming to us.

‘The BWF has been a vital force in helping timber to stem the tide of PVCu and aluminium windows going into new build and refurbishment projects by insisting on proper quality standards and accreditation.

‘In line with best practice in the building industry, we believe this same approach will be taken all the way down the supply chain, and joinery manufacturers will increasingly partner with timber suppliers who provide a high quality service.’

Mr Plews says that although softwood dominates the timber window sector, there is still strong demand for hardwood, especially in specialist and refurbishment projects,

The company, whose US subsidiary Meridian Forest Products Inc provides access to North American clears and hardwoods, has developed tropical hardwood specialist supply sources in Brazil, Asia and Africa, all with ‘credible forest management programmes’. It can also supply Brazilian parana pine and sources an increasing range of panel products from Europe, the Far East and Brazil.
