The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has welcomed a fresh sustainable construction initiative by the UK and Swedish governments.
The collaboration, recently launched by UK climate change and environment minister Elliot Morley, is designed to highlight the use of enviromentally-friendly technology and practices, bringing together examples of joint UK-Sweden work.
CIOB says construction and use of buildings account for about half of all UK greenhouse gas emissions, while building and demolition create more than three times the level of waste produced by all UK households combined.
An institute spokesperson said: “The CIOB welcomes collaborative solutions to sustainability, like the UK-Sweden initiative and we would like to encourage further ventures with other countries to transfer knowledge and experiences.”
