The plant, costing €80m, features a boiler plant producing 85MW of thermal energy and a heat pressure turbine generating 20MW of electricity, combusting 160,000 tonnes of wood fuel per year in the process.
In addition to reducing the plant’s carbon dioxide emission by as much as 95%, UPM newsprint division president Hartmut Wurster has said that it will “create new activity in the biofuel supply chain” in the Rouen and Haute-Normandie regions.
UPM Shotton has recently inaugurated its latest renewable energy plant, which Welsh secretary of state Peter Hain has hailed as exemplary and said is “playing a crucial role in helping us to reduce carbon emissions”.
