US hardwood export volumes and prices are improving, according to the latest government figures.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service says shipments between January and July were only 2.8% behind volumes for the same period last year, while the value of exports was US$5m more than 2002.

Shippers also reported an increase in demand for veneer logs and sawlogs. Exports of hardwood logs have grown from 1.7 million m3 to 2.3 million m3 since 1999, with Canada buying around 70% of volume.
