Vietnam’s wood processing sector spent US$480m on timber imports during the period, according to figures from the ministry, although exports rose by 23% on 2006, bringing in US$1.1bn.
The Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association said that locally-grown timber accounted for only 20% of the materials used by processors, manufacturers and craftsmen in the country last year.
