Weyerhaeuser has agreed to pay US$14m to Coast Mountain Hardwoods in settlement of a lawsuit in which it was alleged to have monopolised alder sawlog and finished lumber markets.

Coast Mountain Hardwoods had originally sought more than US$820m in the case filed at a US district court in Portland, Oregon.

Weyerhaeuser, which made no admission of liability, said the pay-out will result in a US$9m after-tax charge in the first quarter.

The company has to defend itself in a further antitrust case relating to alder markets, scheduled for trial on May 11.
