WRAP wants to eliminate or divert from landfill an additional 3.2 million tonnes of material per year by 2008, as well as turn another 4 million adults into “committed recyclers”.
The organisation will concentrate its effort on large tonnage gains in sectors such as the construction industry, where woodwaste is one of the largest waste streams after aggregates.
WRAP will support the wood recycling sector by contributing to the development of the government’s biomass strategy. It will work with Defra to ensure wood biofuel use does not compromise the growing UK recycling infrastructure.
Liz Goodwin, WRAP director of construction and manufacturing, said wood recyclers would be supported through the organisation’s Business Growth programme, especially development of effective marketing tools. A further captial competition to boost UK reprocessing capacity is also being considered.
WRAP says UK recycling saves 10-15 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases per year – equal to taking 3.5 million cars off the road.
