Nottingham city council is to trial buses fuelled by woodwaste as part of its effort to tackle the city’s carbon footprint.

The Scania EcoLink buses are the first in the UK to use ethanol for power, with the fuel sourced from waste generated by Sweden’s forestry-related industries.

Nottingham city council, which is undertaking the project in conjunction with Nottingham City Transport, will trial the vehicles for 18 months to assess the economic, environmental and business case for using ethanol for fuel. It received more than £500,000 of funding for the scheme from the East Midlands Development Agency.

“We hope this trial will be successful and help pave the way for more ethanol-fuelled buses in Nottingham to reduce the environmental impact of transport in the city,” said Brian Parbutt, portfolio holder for transport, economic development and skills at the council.
