Alpi commits to sustainable forestry

Italian timber business Alpi Group and the Tropical Forest Trust (TFT) have announced an agreement to implement best practice principles and sustainable forest management in Cameroon.

Alpi, which has more than half of its production based overseas and produces rotary cut veneer, plywood, sawn timber and multi-laminar products in Cameroon, said that it has a “great responsibility” to manage its tropical timber resources in the best possible way to ensure they are “there for the next generation”.

The company has published an Environmental Policy Commitment and also a partnership with TFT to help implement sustainable practices at its operations.

TFT executive-director Scott Poynton said agreement could lead to further benefits for Africa as a whole.

“[Apli’s] actions can have a very positive influence at the local level but also on the national scene in Cameroon and more broadly throughout the Congo Basin,” said Mr Poynton.

“Two of its forest areas border the Lobeke National Park so its work to ensure that these forests are sustainably managed is a huge bonus to conservation.”
