Architecture festival reveals wood prize shortlist

A spa in Vietnam, a power station in France and an airport terminal in New Zealand are among the eight projects shortlisted by the World Architecture Festival (WAF) for its inaugural Wood Excellence Prize.

The award, sponsored by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), is open to projects that have wood as an integral part.

The architects will present their projects to the judges live at the festival, which takes place in Singapore from October 1-3.

WAF programme director Paul Finch said the award was an opportunity to appreciate how a 'traditional' material could transform exteriors and interiors "in new and unexpected ways".

WAF now features 28 individual award categories.

AHEC will exhibit at the festival and highlight the results of "The Wish List" - a design project featuring architects and designers including Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Alison Brooks and Amanda Levete.

The eight projects shortlisted for the Wood Excellence Prize are: The Tent, a21studio, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam; Pittwater House, Andrew Burges Architects; Sydney, Australia; Earth Wind and Fire, Atelier Arcau, Vannes, France; School't Hofke, UArchitects, Eindhove, The Netherlands; Regional Terminal at Christchurch Airpor, BVN Donovan Hill, Christchurch, New Zealand; Salvaged Ring, a21studio, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam; Alex Monroe Studio, DSDHA, London, UK; The Pinch, Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong, Zhaotong, China.
