Australian Green Building Council recognises sustainable wood

18 December 2009

PEFC International has welcomed the decision of the Australian Green Building Council (AGBC) to recognise wood from all internationally accredited certified sustainable forest management schemes.

“Considering that 90% of the world’s forests are not certified to any sustainable forest management systems, rewarding the leaders in this field will promote the uptake of certification, strengthen the supply chain and improve forest management globally,” said PEFC International director-general Ben Gunneberg.

He said that it was fitting that initiatives promoting sustainable buildings, such as the AGBC, promoted wood from sustainably managed forests.

PEFC accounts for more than two-thirds of the world’s certified sustainable forest management, including Australian forests certified under the Australian Forestry Standard.
