Baltics provide Welsh solution

22 October 2012

Foresters in Wales are hoping the planting of the rarely used blight-resistant Macedonian pine could help battle the effects of Dothistroma, which is attacking the more common Corsican pine.

Dothistroma forced Forestry Commission Wales to stop planting Corsican pine in 2006. The Silvicultural Operations team has collected thousands of pines from Macedonian pine stands across North Wales.

The seeds will be extracted and pre-treated over several months before being sown at a Forestry Commission nursery in Delamere for planting in 2015. The project could yield more than 80,000 plants.
