Border Hardwood wins environment award

23 June 2019

Oak timber merchant, Border Hardwood, has won the Environmental Innovation Award at the Shropshire Chamber Business Awards. The award was presented to Border’s managing director, Charlie Bevan-Jones, at an awards gala dinner on June 14.

The business awards are a celebration of the county’s best companies, who put the region on the map by boosting the economy and making a positive contribution to the local community. Sponsored by the Centre for Research into Environmental Science and Technology (CREST), the Environmental Innovation Award is aimed at environmentally aware businesses who have introduced or developed innovative environmental practices, processes or technology either for use within their own business or for the marketplace.

Border Hardwood, one of the largest European oak stockists in the UK, was able to show judges a real commitment to sustainability. From employing a dedicated ‘sustainability officer’, taking a proactive role in FSC and PEFC certification programmes, to taking measures to reduce their carbon footprint on-site, the firm demonstrated a collective and innovative approach to making their business as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible.

“With sustainability being a core part of our values and beliefs, the business takes pride in providing its customers with responsibly sourced and managed timber,” said Mr Bevan-Jones. “Clearly, being presented with an award in recognition of our efforts is a fantastic result, but winning the environmental innovation category goes one better.”
