Brazilian exports slump
2 April 2009Exports of wood products from Brazil in February dropped 43.5% in value compared with the same period last year, according to the latest report from the International Tropical Timber Organisation.
The biggest fall in value came from tropical plywood, closely followed by tropical sawnwood, but all sectors experienced a marked fall.
Meanwhile, despite the slump, the country’s Union of Timber Industries has discussed ways for companies to increase exports to Arab countries. Exports from Brazilian companies to Arab countries totalled US$83.5m in 2008.
The Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce said the participation in international exhibitions and trade fairs would help promote the quality of Brazilian timber.
