Chemical spill

17 December 2008

A chemical spill near BSW Timber’s Fort William sawmill led to the evacuation of the facility and the loss of half a day’s production.

A lorry en route to a fish farm spilled a 1,000-litre container of chemicals on the A830 near the mill at Corpach on December 10.

The road was shut for 22 hours to allow for a clean-up operation, with the mill having to close for a night and a morning due to its close proximity to the site.

A BSW spokesperson said the lost production was recovered the following week.

The Fort William mill has an annual sawn timber production of about 95,000m³ and normally operates on a single shift.
