6 November 2006

Mike Clark has taken over at the head of the PEFC Council from founding chairman Henri Plauche Gillon with a pledge to push for more acceptance of certified products.

Mr Plauche Gillon, who had led the organisation for seven years, told the PEFC General Assembly in Oregon that the organisation was rapidly approaching 200 million ha of certified forests with more than 18,000 logo users and 2,800 certified enterprises.

He said that in the past year the certified area had increased by almost 65 million ha and the number of businesses with a PEFC chain of custody certificate was up by 20%.

“Having established the world's largest resource available of certified wood, PEFC will focus on market acceptance of certified products,” said Mr Clark, who was elected UK chairman last year.

The 10th General Assembly was attended by delegates from 31 member countries, environmental organisations, unions and international groups.
