Conference explores British timber prospects

7 March 2014

Opportunities for British timber will be the focus of the Royal Forestry Society’s (RFS) NDJ James Memorial conference on May 1.

The event, at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, will look at the prospects for timber engineering, processing and procurement from all perspectives – from timber growers to processors, buyers and users.

Speakers include Dr Ed Suttie, director of timber at the BRE; Richard Harris, professor of timber engineering, University of Bath; Peter Wilson, director of the Wood Studio at Edinburgh Napier University; Michael Eliasson, director of Swedish Wood; Ben Law, from The Roundwood Timber Framing Company; and Jez Ralph of Timber Strategies.

“Research is increasing our knowledge of how to grow timber suitable for use in construction,” said RFS development director Simon Lloyd.

“Grown in Britain is creating favourable conditions to pull more UK-grown timber through to market. These developments create new opportunities to add value at every stage of the timber supply chain.

“This is a chance to showcase examples of large and small scale buildings using locally-grown timber; and explore the science and art of growing trees for construction markets.”

The conference is being held in association with the Royal Agricultural Society of England, and is supported by Confor, Grown in Britain and TRADA.
