Congressmen campaign for FSC exclusivity to be dropped

23 July 2010

US congressmen have asked the Green Building Council (LEED) to ditch its FSC only certification policy.

In a letter to Rick Fedrizzi, 79 members of the House of Representatives said expanding sustainable forest certification in the programme could stimulate the forest products market and boost jobs.

LEED’s exclusive acceptance of Forest Stewardship Council certification, which represents only a third of the amount of forests certified using the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, PEFC, or American Tree Farm System, undercuts the success of both the American wood products industry and our green building efforts, said Robert Glowinski, president of the American Wood Council.

He said such broad and bipartisan support from congressmen could make a “critical” difference to the workers and companies producing wood products using sustainable certification programmes currently excluded from LEED.
