Cracking down on carbon

Architects, engineers and housing providers had a close-up of window technology designed to reduce carbon emissions during an open day at a housing association development in Norwich.

Some 38 people attended the event, which showcased Dwell-Vent technology, including Supply Air Windows manufactured by Howarth Timber.

The windows in the Carbon Trust-supported project, which also involves former Cambridge University professor Dr Mike McEvoy, use solar energy to warm air as it passes between two panes of glass, before entering the room through regulating "smart-vents".

The system demonstrated at the Flagship Housing Group's development also uses the Dwell-Vent passive stack ventilation system to discharge moist air from kitchens and bathrooms.

UK ventilation and energy expert Dr David Ross, who is involved in drafting the next revision to Building Regulations, was a speaker at the open day.
