Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the treasury, has visited BSW Timber’s Boat of Garten sawmill.

BSW's head of public affairs Hamish Macleod said the company used the opportunity to discuss some of the key issues facing BSW and the wider forestry/timber sector.

"It is the important the government works to develop sustainable solutions from UK-grown timber to achieve enhanced rural employment, improved trade balance and value-added manufacturing capacity," he said.

BSW flagged up the importance of new productive woodland creation to ensure the timber sector could continue to develop and grow.

It also emphasised how timber's carbon storage ability should put the material in pole position for housebuilding and home improvement programmes.

The Boat of Garten sawmill has an annual turnover of £10m and processes 92,000m3 of logs each year.
