Finland raises largest timber building

29 October 2012

Finland’s largest multi-storey timber building has been completed in Viikki based on the Metsä Wood Multi-Storey System.

The project included five buildings each with three to four floors and provides 104 flats with a total floor area is 6,300m2.

The buildings comprise Kerto structured beam and post frame, intermediate floors, roofing panels and exterior walls delivered as timber frames. The balconies and awnings were made from Kerto and glulam elements.

The building is crowned with a 42mm-thick King Panel made from Metsä's King Beam glulam. The façade panel is up to 12m long.

Ari Tiukkanen, senior vice-president of Metsä Building Products, said: "The frame and intermediate floor phase was accomplished very quickly because there was no drying related to concrete construction."
