Finnforest presents green building solutions

16 October 2009

Finnforest has presented its timber building solutions to a Green Building Workshop organised by the UN Economic Commission for Europe Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The October 12 workshop in Geneva, also designed to showcase energy efficient construction, had a theme of “Wood’s place in a global approach to green building”.

Mikko Ohela, senior vice-president of international corporate affairs at Finnforest parent Metsäliitto Group, said wood products’ potential to contribute to climate change mitigation remained an unexploited opportunity in climate policy.

He urged policymakers at this December’s Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to recognise the carbon storage in harvested wood products.

“Until today, the focus for improving the energy-efficiency of buildings has been on reducing the energy consumption during the use of the building and the carbon dioxide emissions this consumption creates.

“The perspective should be widened to cover the phase of manufacture of building products.”
