Finnish forests highlight sustainable futures

The Finnish Forest Association has highlighed the use of timber as an effective way to maximise the benefits of using natural resources.

Juha Hakkarainen, president of the association, told the Renewable Resources – Sustainable Future forum that wood is a good example of a renewable material as Finland produces a range of products from its forests, including processed timber, paper and bioenergy.

“Forests and wood illustrate a renewable natural resource with multiple potentials,” said Mr Hakkarainen. “A competitive and eco-efficient forest cluster combined with the fact that forests are a renewable source make an excellent foundation for sustainable development.”

Sirkka-Liisa Anttila, Finnish minister for agriculture and forestry, also noted the importance of using renewable resources, claiming they will help shape “the future of mankind”.

“More efficient, sustainable use of raw materials, as well as combating the threats of climate change, will be key issues in determining the future of mankind,” said Ms Anttila.

The Renewable Resources – Sustainable Future forum, organised by the Finnish Forest Assovction, is designed to promote competitiveness and sustainability in the Baltic Sea area by bringing together representatives from different sectors to discuss the use of renewable materials.
