Finnish forests’ timber volume rises

4 July 2012

The volume of wood in Finnish forests has increased to its highest level in recorded history, according a new report.

The latest National Forest Inventory, published by the Finnish Forest Research Institute, says annual growth is at 104 million m3, with an overall wood volume of 2.3 million m3.

Timber volumes have increased by 40% during the last 40 years. The institute said if fellings and natural removal remained at current levels, Finnish forests would contain 3 billion m3 by 2039.

It said the growth was based on a high share of fairly young forests whose growth rate is fast.
