Finnish log purchases double

The Finnish forest industry purchased 2 million m³ of timber from private forests in May, more than double the volume of April.

The Finnish Forest Industries Federation reported all timber grades to be in demand, but with sawlogs in particular demand.

Despite the pick-up, ??the aggregate volume of purchases in the early part of the year still lags almost one-third behind the longer-term average.

January-May volumes totalled 5.7 million m³, down 17% from the corresponding period of 2010.

The sawlog purchase volume was 2.1 million m³, down a quarter from the corresponding period of the previous year. Procurements were down 42% compared to the five-year average.

On average, stumpage prices were up 5-11% from May 2010. Compared to April 2011, stumpage prices increased 1-2%.
