Finnish sawn timber production grows in 2011

Finnish sawn timber production hit 7.6 million m³ in January-September, a growth of 5% on a year ago, according to the latest statistics from the Finnish Forest Industries Federation (FFIF).

But third quarter volumes decreased from the same period in 2010, reflecting the uncertain economic environment in Europe.

Plywood output was up 10% to around 800,000m³.

“The outlook is uncertain for the sawmill industry, with unstable economic developments in the most significant market countries eroding construction activity,” said FFIF.

It said the US has not managed to stem its economic problems, while reconstruction in Japan has not yet generated strong demand for wood products. It also said North Africa and the Middle East were adversely affected by political instability.

“The production volumes of various producer countries have not reacted to demand, which is slackening in most markets, and excess supply has begun to emerge,” it said.

FFIF said it was crucial that moderate wage solutions were negotiated for the export industry and that industry action is avoided throughout the delivery chain.
