Fire at Nexfor plant

20 May 2004

Staff at Nexfor's South Molton plant in Devon had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in the wood preparation area.

More than 80 people were working on the site when the blaze started at about 6.30pm on May 14. All escaped injury.

An explosion occurred, which, according to media reports, sent debris up to 100m away and damaged a building.

Nexfor said the factory was re-opened within 48 hours and supply chain disruption was minimal due to the flexibility and support of its group operations.

The company added: "Nexfor is currently co-operating with the Health & Safety Executive and emergency services in order to determine the cause of the fire."
