Formby Pool wins Wood Awards gold

18 October 2007

The Formby Pool in Lancashire has won the Gold Award at the Wood Awards 2007.

Described by the judges as “transcendental in its calmness and simplicity”, Formby Pool features a Douglas fir timber frame clad in English oak, Kerto LVL bowstring trusses supporting the roof and a plywood diaphragm deck supported by engineered I-beams. It was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects.

At the awards ceremony at Carpenters' Hall in London last night, the winning team were presented with a wooden replica of the building.

According to Formby Land Trust, the building is “proving extremely popular with the local community” and saw 4,000 people pass through its doors during the first week.

JDM Contracts Ltd undertook joinery work on the pool, and Dew Construction carried out the exterior cladding.

All Wood Awards 2007 winners will feature in the next edition of TTJ.
