FSC certificate for Metsä forests

Metsä has been awarded an FSC group certificate that covers company-owned forests in Finland.

The certificate includes 35,000ha, but contractual customers of Metsä’s parent Metsäliito Co-operative can join the group certificate, Metsä said.

“We want to offer our owner-members comprehensive forestry and environmental services, including forest certification,” said Juha Mäntylä, executive vice-president of Metsä Forest.

The forests were previously certified by PEFC. “The standard is well applicable to Finnish commercial forests and we did not find any major differences between FSC and PEFC requirements,” a spokesman said.

Metsä said 80% of the wood used by the group is certified.
