Glulam gridshell roof nearing completion

The massive 300m-long glulam gridshell structure covering the new Crossrail station at Canary Wharf is nearing completion.

Austrian timber construction specialist Wiehag said the structure, which covers a park and retail premises over the £500m station, should be complete by the end of January.

Wiehag UK sales director John Spittle said the roof was turning heads in Canary Wharf and he believes the project could help aid the specification of glulam in large commercial developments.

The 11,500m2 structure, which commenced construction in the summer, features 1,500 glulam beams (1,000m3) and is thought to be the UK’s largest glulam contract to date.
