Grown in Britain Week becomes annual event

1 November 2013

The success of the inaugural Grown in Britain (GiB) week has prompted organisers to plan a bigger and even better event next year.

This year's event, held on October 14-20, was backed by companies across the timber and forestry sectors, as well as building contractors and retailers, in a drive to boost the profile of home-grown wood products and create a wood culture in the UK.

The UK Contractors Group (UKCG) also announced that around 19 building contractors representing more than £22bn worth of turnover had got behind the wider Grown in Britain campaign, which started following a government recommendation for a wood industry action plan. This represents nearly two-thirds of the UKCG's main contractor members.

"We had amazing feedback from this year's GiB Week, such that people were already asking whether we had an aspiration to have GiB Week 2014, so the dates have been set," said Ed Suttie, part of the GiB delivery team.

"It will be bigger and better, which will be fabulous. We will expect more public activities and events next year as well as the high-level events."

Events from this year's week included the launch of a range of English ash furniture at Heal's, publication of the GiB Report, the launch of the National Coppice Federation and a hardwood conference at Vastern Timber.
