Gunns launches lawsuit

23 December 2004

Tasmanian timber company Gunns has launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the leader of the Australian Greens Bob Brown and other environmentalists.

Gunns served writs on 20 individuals and groups, including the Wilderness Society and Doctors for Forests, claiming their ongoing campaigns were damaging the company.

Senator Brown descibed the legal action, which reportedly seeks damages of A$6.3m, as an attack on the right to protest on behalf of the nation's heritage.

But Gunns said its action was designed to protect the interests of its employees, contractors and shareholders. The company said campaigners had made allegations about health and safety risks faced by its employees, as well trespassing on private property and damaging equipment.
