22 November 2012

Icklesham Joinery has won the UK joinery industry’s highest technical award.

The company won the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Technical Award for its renovation of the Robert Adam-designed RSA House off the Strand in London. It was presented with the trophy at the BWF's annual dinner at Lord's Cricket Ground on November 16.

Icklesham's work included air conditioning unit housings, fire-rated doorsets and shutters, roof lantern mouldings, oak wall panelling, oak speaker units, cloakroom storage and double entrance doors into the Great Room.

"To work with a demanding architect and main contractor to achieve such an innovative outcome calls for all-round good management, excellent technical skills and individual craftsmanship," said BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee.

Runners-up were Howarth Timber Windows and Doors, K&D Joinery, Metsä Wood and JELD-WEN.

Chris Lake of Devon-based GS Haydon & Son Ltd won the BWF Apprentice of the Year Award.

Guest speaker Dr Peter Bonfield, BRE chief executive, talked about his role with the Olympic Delivery Authority on the construction of the Olympic Park.

He urged BWF members to build on their proud past and continue to grow in prosperity.
