Kennedy praises BSW Timber plans

2 May 2007

Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has used a visit to BSW Timber's Fort William sawmill to proclaim that the company plays a key part in the Scottish economy.

BSW has announced a £25m investment and expansion programme for the Fort William site, which will see the sawmill take over a 67-acre site, formerly owned by Arjo Wiggins, adjacent to its existing facilities.

And Mr Kennedy, MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber, said that this would improve job and training opportunities for local people, as well as further the company's role in the Scottish economy.

BSW Timber makes an important contribution to the Highlands and Scottish economy,” said Mr Kennedy. “This significant investment will ensure better quality jobs and training opportunities for local people.”

Mr Kennedy, who toured the site with Lord Russell-Johnston and Craig Harrow, Liberal Democrat candidate for Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber, added that this, coupled with the changes to the infrastructure at the Fort William sawmill, would help produce better quality end products.
