Log shortages create problems for Indian panel manufacturers

23 September 2011

Raw material shortages in India’s wood-based panel manufacturing sector are forcing many plants to operate at well below capacity, according to the International Tropical Timber Organisation’s latest market report.

Two strategies being considered include the development of technologies for more efficient raw material utilisation and the establishment of fast-growing plantations.

Options being considered by the composite board sector include greater use of non-wood renewable fibres such as bamboo and agro-residues.
