MakeIT! competition winners chosen

The winners of the Proskills MakeIT! Furniture and MakeIT! Wood schools competition have been chosen and will be announced on June 19.

Programme director Lisa Williamson said the standard of entries was very high.

"The judges were all really impressed and believe that the winning entries show the value of MakeIT! In driving up interest in and knowledge about the furniture and wood industries," she said.

The MakeIT! Furniture project asked students to research and design a product, identifying the type of raw materials used, taking into account sustainable design and production processes.

The MakeIt! Wood brief required students to research engineered timberk construct a model of a laminated wooden beam, develop design proposals for a landscape structure using glulam and investigate the production processes involved.

In both categories students were also asked to demonstrate their understanding of the environmental issues of the respective industry.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at The City of Oxford College.

The judges were: Dave Campbell, British Woodworking Federation; Sally Clarke, Sally Clarke Furniture; Mark Murphy, Donaldson Timber; Richard Rankin, AMUSF Ltd; Liz Turner, TRADA; Emily Payne, Timber Trade Federation; Tony Smart, Workshipful Company of Furniture Makers; and Gordon Jeffrey, Glennon Brothers.
