Metsä in €30m Vilppula sawmill upgrading

9 July 2012

Metsä Group is to invest €30m in upgrading its Vilppula sawmill.

The improvement will include building a new sawmill and raw processing plant and renovating other parts of the sawmill.

The new sawmill will enable the use of diverse sawing patterns and efficient use of both small and large logs but capacity will not change significantly.

“The investment project will enable us to offer more highly processed products that are customised precisely to customers’ needs, based on their product ranges and production processes,” said Timo Karinen, Metsä Wood group executive vice-president.

“We want to remain a leader in serving demanding industrial customers, including our own processing operations.”

Statutory negotiations into upgrading the mill were launched on May 21 and completed on July 2. Mill staff numbers were reduced by 40. The Vilppula sawmill has an annual capacity of about 450,000m3.
