More ash tree disease sites discovered in Wales

Chalara ash dieback disease has been identified at five newly-planted sites in Wales.

Surveys of others recently planted sites in Wales are continuing. The discoveries follow the first finding of the worrying tree disease in Wales – in Carmarthenshire.

“The Welsh government is taking the threat of this disease very seriously and officials are working closely with our partners in the Forestry Commission, Defra, the Food and Environment Research Agency and the devolved administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland on a UK-wide response,” said Welsh environment minister John Griffiths.

A UK action plan to tackle the disease is focused on reducing its spread, developing resistance in the native UK ash tree population and building resilience in the UK woodland associated industries.
