Morland innovation removes plastic use

Major fit-out product manufacturer Morland says it is taking the fight against plastic use into new arenas by coming up with a solution to replace plastic encapsulated intumescent strips on fire-doors.

Morland said plastic bags, cotton buds, plastic stirrers and straws were are all on the UK Government’s hit list, but it said the plastic encapsulated intumescent strip also needed an alternative.

Morland launched at UK Construction Week a patented fire rated door frame system, Forever Firecheckwhere the intumescent material is held in place by the “wrap” Morland apply to their MDF Mouldings, eradicating the need for the traditional plastic encapsulation.

The wrap can be paper, vinyl, veneer or laminate.

Tested and approved by Warrington Certifire and included in Morland’s own Certifire certificate, it will be in Vicaima’s certification by the end of the year and Halspan and Strebord have begun the process of adding it to their Global Assessments.

Morland said the innovation, which cannot be removed or seen, could remove millions of linear metres of plastic annually.

“We believe this product to be a real game changer in the fire door set safety market at a time when building compartmentalisation is such a focus,” Morland said.
