New campaign puts spotlight on fire door safety

9 September 2013

A host of organisations, including the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), are preparing to launch Fire Door Safety Week on September 16-21.

A major collaboration between fire safety groups, fire door and ironmongery organisations, as well as property associations, is behind the campaign.

Activities will draw attention to specific issues, including poor fire door installation and maintenance, plus the need to encourage building owners and users to check the condition of fire doors and report those that aren’t satisfactory.

“The recent reports of terrible fire door installations identified by Stoke-on-Trent City Council are just the tip of the iceberg, but give us a very clear case study of how things go wrong and what the awful implications could be,” said John Fletcher, manager of the BWF-CERTIFIRE scheme.

Mr Fletcher urged the door industry to get behind the initiative.

Fire Door Safety Week will include experts issuing new checklists and guidance on managing fire doors, a live broadcast of a fire resistance test at BM TRADA, training initiatives and a mass distribution of information to 22,000 Westminster council home residents.
