Nichol retires after record service with James Jones & Sons

James Jones & Sons Ltd has bid a fond farewell to Bill Nichol, the company’s longest serving member of staff, who has retired after a remarkable 65 years of service.

Mr Nichol started work with the company as a 15-year-old apprentice electrician in 1946. Apart from a spell of national service where he was a gunner with the RAF in Shackleton Bombers, and a three-year break elsewhere, he has been busy working with all types of timber machinery in the company for 65 years. The engineering division of James Jones also benefited from his skills for a period of time.

Throughout the years Mr Nichol had to adapt to considerable changes in James Jones’s plant and machinery, yet he continued to work tirelessly right up to his retirement.

“James Jones has a great track record in retaining its staff - the average length of service for an employee is over 35 years,” said joint managing director Ian Pirie. “But Bill has set a unique record of his own. We are fortunate as a company to have had Bill’s expertise for all these years and we wish him a long and happy retirement.”
