NPPD chairman calls for youth and training

The sentiments of Geoff Rhodes, the past president of the Timber Trade Federation, that the timber industry needs to employ "bright young things", were echoed at this year's National Panel Products Division (NPPD) annual dinner.

Addressing more than 450 guests at London's Carlton Tower hotel, NPPD chairman David Francis said that the age of the personnel involved in the sector was a "cause for concern".

"We are beginning to see more young people enter our trade…but I would suggest that a greater influx is desirable," he continued.

He added that training was essential and that the TTF's formation of a new education, training and careers committee was to be applauded.

Mr Francis also said that this "bright new breed" should be adequately reimbursed. "For too long our industry has failed to produce a package sufficiently attractive enough when compared to a career in the financial and insurance institutions in the City."

Commenting on the general state of the market, Mr Francis stressed the importance of "keeping value in our products".

"I do not think that we have ever before had a better platform on which to stand and deliver this principle," he said.

"The Responsible Purchasing Policy will further cement this base, as does the excellent wood. for good campaign. The about to be introduced Promotion Premium Levy should provide us with adequate funding with which we may continue our message.

"We have all the ingredients in place – let us not waste the opportunity."
