Obituary – Alf Lawrence

3 July 2009

Alf Lawrence, retired ex-director of the Timbmet Silverman group, died on June 26 after losing his brave battle against cancer. He was 69.

Mr Lawrence, who had been in the timber trade all his life, started his career in the late 1950s when he joined Thames Plywood, one of the UK’s major plywood manufacturers at the time. He started work in the despatch department and was later promoted to sales representative, and eventually sales manager.

He joined Silverman in 1980 as sales manager Basildon depot, and in 1989 became a full Board director. As sales director he helped guide the company through the recession in the early 1990s. His vast knowledge of panel products, especially veneered board and manufacturing processes, made him one of the leading experts in his field and he was respected by colleagues, customers and suppliers alike.

After retiring in 2005, Mr Lawrence spent some time restoring a classic mark one, Austin Mini, his pride and joy; he also travelled extensively, visiting many countries.

He is survived by his wife June, son Colin, daughter Laura, and two grandchildren, Beth and Tom.

Donations in the name of Alf Lawrence can be sent to Little Havens Children’s Hospice, Daws Heath Road, Thundersley, Essex SS7 2LH.
