Obituary – Charles Craig

Charlie Craig, the former chairman of Charles Craig (Timber Agents) Ltd, Liverpool and Craig Lumber Corp, Collierville, TN, US, died peacefully in hospital near his Wirral home on December 19, 2012. He was 82.

Mr Craig was born in Liverpool and started as an apprentice in the Liverpool timber docks in 1950. He later worked as a director of Timber Agent Lloyd Duncan Ltd, Liverpool.

In 1962 he founded Charles Craig (Timber Agents) Ltd, which grew to become one of the largest hardwood timber agents in the UK. In 1977 he founded Craig Lumber Corp, Memphis TN to import tropical timber to the US from its existing sawmill suppliers around the world. Craig Lumber Corp also exported US hardwoods to Europe.

The UK agency was sold to DLH (UK) Ltd in 2006 and Craig Lumber Corp was sold to Atlanta Hardwood Corp, US in 2010.

Mr Craig was a past president of the North West Timber Trade Association and a past director of the Timber Trade Federation. He was also an active member of the Liverpool Timber Trade Golfing society and Liverpool Timber Trades' Benevolent Society.

He is survived by Anne, his wife of 55 years, and son Charlie. Their daughter Jenny passed away in 2010.

A thanksgiving service will be held at 1pm on January 8, at St Peter's Church, Village Rd, Heswall, Merseyside, CH60 ODZ, and afterwards at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Meols Drive, Hoylake, Wirral, CH47 4AL.
