Obituary – K Warren Nielsen
7 March 2021TTJ has just been made aware that K Warren Nielsen died on April 1 last year after a brief illness, seven months after his wife, Mary.
The former Kingston-upon-Hull timber importer and merchant, was a well-known and respected member of the Hull wood trade and the Chamber of Commerce and Shipping.
During the war, after Home Guard service, he qualified as a ships writer, serving aboard aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable, which formed part of the British Fleet present at the surrender of Japan. Warren’s father and founder of the family business KA Nielsen & Co, travelled by train to Portsmouth to meet the returning vessel, renting a tug in order to sail around the Solent calling “Nielsen” through a megaphone to welcome his son home. That same gentleman broadcasting to Denmark, The Marshall Plan for the BBC post war.
Warren would be regularly seen walking to lunch at either the Kardomah in Whitefriargate or Carmichaels wearing either a bowler hat or trilby, his signature headwear.
His son Arvid, continues the family wood trade tradition.
