Ontario to celebrate wood use

Nominations have opened for the annual Wood WORKS! Awards, which celebrate “organisations dedicated to pioneering and preserving the use of wood in Ontario”.

The competition includes 12 categories: Green Building Wood Design, Interior Wood Design, Residential Wood Design, Multi-Unit Wood Design, Commercial Wood Design, Institutional Wood Design under C$10m, Institutional Wood Design over C$10m, Northern Ontario Excellence, Jury's Choice, Engineer Wood Advocate, Architect Wood Advocate and Wood Champion.

Last year, a 530ft² painter’s studio in Dundas, Canada, built from Douglas fir, spruce and eastern white pine, received the Residential Wood Design Award, while the 45,567ft² Young Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto was awarded the Commercial Wood Design Award for its use of rough-cut Douglas fir timber trusses to convert two existing brick tankhouses.

The nomination process for the 2008 awards is open until September 19. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on November 12.
